PIONEER D'ARTANIAN 436 × PIONEER ROMEES DOUBLE

Two inbred stock birds from two unrelated dynasties — D'Artanian doubled onto Olympic Romee doubled

THE PAIRING

The most textbook piece of breeding on the 2025 card. Both parents are concentrated on a single great ancestor — the cock on D'Artanian, the hen on Olympic Romee — and the two families share nothing whatever. Cross two inbred birds from unrelated lines and you get maximum hybrid vigour in the first generation, with both grandparent types still strong enough to breed on.

The cock is D'Artanian paired to one of D'Artanian's own daughters. The hen is a son of Olympic Romee paired to a daughter of Olympic Romee. Every youngster from this pair carries two elite marathon and National families at close range with no inbreeding of its own.

The Cock — GB18N76436 "Pioneer D'Artanian 436"

Blue · Stock Cock · Frans Zwols, bred by Zwols Pigeons

A direct son of D'Artanian (NL07-1230197) out of one of his own daughters — roughly 25% inbred to him. D'Artanian is responsible for 13 × 1st at National, Amal and Combine level, including 1st against 19,476 birds, 3 × 1st NFC, 3 × 1st BICC, 1st BBC, 2 × 1st Amal up to 5,500 birds and 4 × 1st Combine.

His dam 749 (NL11-1207749) is a true champion breeder — dam and granddam of 535, winner of five Open National positions in 2013, of Max (1st Open BICC 2015, 1st Combine Falaise), and of a winner of 1st Amal against 5,500+ birds.

In short: as close to a genetic copy of D'Artanian as the loft holds.

The Hen — GB20Z16214 "Pioneer Romees Double"

Blue Chequer Pied Hen · Stock · Jelle Jellema, bred by Dean Pallatt

Double Olympic Romee. Her sire is a son of Olympic Romee; her dam is a daughter of Olympic Romee. She is roughly 25% inbred to one of the greatest marathon racers of all time.

Olympic Romee (NL10-1221795) — 1st Olympic Marathon Budapest 2015; 3rd National Bergerac from 10,327 birds; 3rd National Orange from 4,302; 3rd NPO St Vincent from 1,365; 5th National Brive from 7,261; 6th NPO Aurillac from 3,072. She is also the mother of Romy, 3rd National Barcelona 2019.

Her sire Son Romee 201 (NL18-1542201) is out of Son Zwart Goud 969, from the Jellema base breeder Zwart Goud, whose children include 16th National Narbonne 2017 and 97th National Agen 2018. Her dam Daughter Romee 531 (NL17-1732521) is sired by New Silvie 389, whose own father won 1st National and 1st International Barcelona 2013 and whose mother won 3rd International Barcelona 2014.

In short: Olympic Romee twice, with Barcelona International winners immediately behind — marathon blood at the very top of the sport.

GRANDPARENTS OF EVERY YOUNGSTER FROM THIS PAIR

FOUNDATION ANCESTORS

The cock is no longer in the loft, so this mating will not be repeated — the recorded youngsters are the whole of it. Nothing else counts against the pairing: unrelated families, both sides proven, no inbreeding carried by the offspring.

SUMMARY

Pair 07: D'Artanian doubled crossed onto Olympic Romee doubled. Two inbred parents, two unrelated dynasties, and youngsters that carry both at full strength with none of the cost. Three on record.
